Video review made its Grand Slam debut at the 2023 US Open, and came to the Australian Open in 2025. The ATP tour rolled out the technology at all of its Masters 1000 events last year after using it at the NextGen ATP Finals since 2018 and the year-end ATP Finals for the top eight players since 2020.
Video review is separate from the electronic line-calling used for ruling balls in or out. Last year, Wimbledon replaced line umpires with electronic line-calling, though it courted controversy several times in the event. The tournament later blamed “operator error” when a ball hit well long by Brit Sonay Kartal wasn’t called against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and another point needed to be replayed due to system failure during a quarterfinal match between Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov.
This year, Wimbledon will also add adding a visual indication if a ball is out, or a serve is a fault, on its scoreboards in addition to the audible call.
“This enhancement has been made as a result of feedback following the adoption of live electronic line-calling last year,” the All England Club said in Saturday’s announcement.
