The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief Praveen Sood got another one-year extension on Wednesday with the approval coming in from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Sood’s two-year tenure, extended by a year in 2025, was due to end on May 24.
An order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, based on the recommendations of the Committee, has approved the extension in tenure of Shri Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:1986) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of one year beyond May 24.”
A 1986-batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre, Sood served as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) before being appointed CBI director on May 25, 2023. His career includes postings as superintendent of police in Bellary and Raichur; additional commissioner of police (traffic) in Bengaluru City; commissioner of police in Mysuru and Bengaluru; additional director general of police; principal secretary (home); DGP (internal security); and DGP (criminal investigation department). He has also served as an advisor to the government of Mauritius.
Sood is a B.Tech in civil engineering from IIT, Delhi, and has a post-graduation in public policy and Management from IIM, Bengaluru, and Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, New York.
Soon after the Prime Minister-led three-member committee met Tuesday to select the next CBI Director, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recorded his dissent over the proceedings, saying the “Leader of Opposition is not a rubber stamp” and he will not participate in “a biased exercise”. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is the third member of the committee.
