Railway project in Mizoram, Bairabi-Sairang railway line inauguration: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the long-anticipated Bairabi-Sairang railway line project in Mizoram on September 13. This 51.38-km-long rail line is set to change the rail connectivity in the Northeast. The railway project will further improve connectivity and boost economic growth in the region.
Train connectivity to Mizoram
During his visit to Mizoram, PM Modi is expected to flag off three new express trains on Saturday. These trains will connect Mizoram to West Bengal, Delhi and Assam. Speaking to Indianexpress.com, a senior railway official has confirmed the development. “On September 13, three trains will be flagged off — two originating from Bairabi and one from Sairang. The Bairabi services will connect Kolkata and Guwahati, while from Sairang, a new Rajdhani Express will be introduced to link Mizoram with the national capital,” the official said.
Sairang (Aizawl) to Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express train
Sairang is located just 18 km from Aizawl. Thus, a weekly Rajdhani Express train between Sairang and Anand Vihar, will improve connectivity with the national capital.
Bairabi-Guwahati Express train
Sairang to Guwahati express train will run daily. It will further give an impetus to the tourism in the region.
Bairabi-Kolkata Express train
The Sairang-Kolkata express train will run thrice a week. It will provide important connectivity between Mizoram and West Bengal.
Bairabi-Sairang railway project
Built at a cost of around Rs 8,071 crore, the Bairabi-Sairang railway line has 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, 5 road overbridges, and 6 road underbridges along the route. Among these, Bridge No. 196 stands at a height of 114 meters—an impressive 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar.
Significance of Bairabi-Sairang rail line project
The Bairabi-Sairang rail line will not only bring ease and convenience to inter-state travel for locals, but also serve the purpose of intrastate and cross-border movement. Besides making travel easier, it will lead to socio-economic development, boosting tourism and other trade sectors-not only in Mizoram but across the other North-Eastern states as well.
