Roger Federer says that the vision he had for Europe versus the world Laver Cup “came true and more.” But the event has more to give, he says.
Federer joined Tennis Channel Live on Saturday in San Francisco, speaking to a wide range of topics. Namely, he discussed how the event he co-imagined, in its eighth year, has continued to raise the bar for the marriage of sport and entertainment.

“When I started the event with Tony [Godsick, his agent], the idea was that this has to be real tennis,” he said. “This can’t be a hit-and-giggle. For this, we can do exhibitions elsewhere.
“When you’re sitting on the bench and next to you is a legendary player, and Rod Laver is in the building, I’m in the building, John McEnroe is in the building, legends are in the building, and they want to see the best tennis played, you come and perform. Plus, you have the whole team environment, wishing they maybe could be playing instead of you, so you have to show up for them as well.
“I think that whole dynamic creates bringing out the best, and giving really energetic vibes.”
