After losing the first Test in Leeds, India bounced back emphatically in the second Test at Edgbaston. Shubman Gill, who has taken the reins as the new Indian captain, not only excelled in the second Test with the bat by scoring 430 runs also his captaincy decisions on the field and the selection calls did show positive results.
“Shubman Gill did amazing captaincy and batted really well. I am very proud of him and I am sure that his father will also be very proud…I am very impressed…I hope that he goes on to make a lot of centuries in international cricket,” said former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh speaking to ANI.
In addition to Gill scoring 430 runs in the Test match, Akash Deep, who has come into the side in place of Jasprit Bumrah, has picked up 10 wickets in the match. “The overall performance of the Indian team was outstanding. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep bowled amazingly. Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant batted well…I am also very happy for Akash Deep as his sister is recovering from cancer. I will give him a huge hug when I meet him,” said Yuvraj.
Shubman Gill could have broken Brian Lara’s record
Gill looked in sublime form in the first innings of Edgbaston Gill piled on a 269-run marathon innings. The pitch was conducive to batting, and Gill looked in the zone to pile on a mammoth total. Former England cricketer Stuart Broad said Gill looked like he could break Brian Lara’s highest individual Test score of 400.
“I think India were ten out of ten. Sometimes in Test match cricket, when you get such a one-sided result, it’s easy to be critical of the other team which is England at this time, but India were just superb. Shubman Gill 269, honestly it looked like he could have got Lara’s record. He was just cruising. It didn’t look like anything could trouble him.
