The World Cup winning Indian Women’s team touched down in Delhi on Tuesday evening. The Indian Express has learnt that the Harmanpreet Kaur-led unit will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 6 PM in the evening on Wednesday. The Women in Blue ended their wait for an ICC trophy when they defeated South Africa on Sunday in the Women’s World Cup final at Navi Mumbai.
The Indian team will be felicitated by the PM during the meeting with the ceremony set to be held at the Prime Minister’s official residence. After their arrival in Delhi airport, the India players left for the hotel and are set to disperse to their respective home towns after meeting with the PM on Wednesday.
PM Modi was one of the first persons to congratulate India when they won their maiden women’s world title in the DY Patil Stadium. “A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Finals. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports. #WomensWorldCup2025,” PM Modi had said in his post.
As per PTI, the Indian team came to Delhi from Mumbai in a special charter flight (S5-8328) under Star Air, a regional airline. Security arrangements were stepped up in the capital ahead of the team’s arrival following their historic World Cup win. Police personnel conducted checks on the team bus and surrounding routes with dogs running a sniff test to identify any potential threat.
Earlier, the squad members along with head coach Amol Muzumdar got a warm reception at the Mumbai airport where a sizeable crowd came to see them off.
In the final, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs with Deepti Sharma taking 4 wickets and contributing 58 runs with the bat in addition to Shafali Verma’s scintillating knock which helped India post 298 runs. The Proteas skipper Laura Wolvaardt was the lone resistance from South Africa, scoring 101 before falling to a combination of Deepti’s bowling and Amanjot Kaur’s catch.
