Why Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona stint might prove to be fruitful

Marcus Rashford had a grin plastered over his face as he held aloft the #14 shirt of Barcelona after completing a frankly incredulous loan move to the Catalan giants from Manchester United. The forward, frozen out of the English club, said Barcelona already ‘feels like home’ as he embarks on yet another chapter away from his boyhood club.

Critics are still scratching their heads over how the move materialized. The last Englishman who played for Barcelona was Gary Lineker who was snapped up by the Blaugrana after his magnificent performances at Everton where he scored 38 goals in all competitions and the 1986 FIFA World Cup, even winning the Golden Boot in the latter event with 6 goals. By contrast, Rashford’s performance last season of 11 goals in 41 matches looks particularly underwhelming.

There’s also the stench of him being a third choice signing for Barcelona, a rebound if you will, after they failed to secure the services of Nico Williams and Luis Diaz from Athletic Bilbao and Liverpool respectively.

However, if you look at Barcelona’s recent transfer history, the Rashford loan move might not look so surprising. The Catalan club in recent years has made moves in the market for players who don’t quite fit the so-called ‘glamorous signing’ model. The signings of Martin Braithwaite in 2020, a well past his prime Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022 and Malcolm in 2018 immediately spring to mind.

But in Rashford, they have a player who has proved his mettle in the Premier League, widely considered the most competitive in the world as well as the most scrutinized. He scored 138 goals in 429 matches for Manchester United since his debut in 2016, helping them win five major trophies, including two FA Cups and the Europa League. Those are not numbers to be scoffed at.

He might not be able to dislodge Lamine Yamal and Raphinha in the Barca wings but he isn’t expected to. The England international has predominantly been brought in as a cover for the matches where Barcelona’s first choice wingers will be afforded rest. It’s also a move that makes sense for Barcelona who have the option to make the transfer permanent for 30 million Euros if Rashford clicks in the set up, a bargain value for someone who will just turn 28 next year. If not, Rashford can return back to Old Trafford.

Far away from the glare of the notorious English media and pressure of being a Manchester United player, Rashford might just blossom under the new challenge. With blistering pace to run in behind defenders, La Liga might be the perfect league for the Englishman with more space afforded to players due to most teams opting for a much more open playing style compared to the Premier League.

At 27, Rashford is in his peak years but sometimes the forward is his own worst enemy. Since his debut, he has struggled to maintain consistency, where he only managed 20 goals or more in three seasons. In his last two seasons at United he scored a combined 15 goals. If not motivated, Rashford is a frustrating player to watch, something that United management can attest to. Current manager Ruben Amorim had even said that he would rather put a goalkeeper coach on the bench than a player not giving their all when asked about Rashford’s absence from the team last season.

Even under previous manager Erik ten Hag, Rashford had to face disciplinary actions due to missing training after he was spotted in nightspots in Belfast, two nights in a row. He was dropped from United’s FA Cup match against Newport on that occasion.

This slippery slope is what Barcelona manager Hansi Flick will have to navigate when it comes to Rashford. If motivated, he has all the talent to turn matches around on his head but if he lets his shoulders drop, Barcelona might have the same troubles as United.

With the World Cup looming over the horizon though, it’s more likely that Rashford will pull up his socks to stay in contention for the England spot. Because if he can’t thrive in a forward line which has players like Robert Lewandowski, Yamal and Raphinha, his credibility might once again come into question. It’s a move that has the potential to launch Rashford back into the stratosphere like it did with Ousmane Dembele at PSG after his own troubled stint in Barcelona. But if the familiar problems rear their heads, the once bright eyed prodigy from Manchester will likely have to navigate through choppy waters once again.
