Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Special Vigilance Cell raided four locations linked to Assam Civil Services officer Nupur Bora and recovered Rs 92 lakh cash and gold jewellery. Sarma said that Bora was under the scanner for some time. He alleged that Bora profited from sale of land owned by Hindus to Muslims.
Nupur Bora was born on March 31, 1989, according to an Assam government document, and studied at Guwahati’s Cotton College. Then, she did a course in English Literature from Gauhati University.
According to her Facebook profile, her first job was as a postgraduate subject teacher at the Government Higher Secondary School in Tezpur, Assam effective September 2016. She also took up a position as a Lecturer at District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) two years later. DIETs are government-run teacher education institutes that operate at the district level and were established under the National Policy on Education (1986).
The 36-year-old Bora became a civil servant six years ago. Originally from Assam’s Golaghat, her first posting was as Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong district in January 2019.
Her next move was to the Barpeta district in June 2023 as Circle Officer. When the raids happened on Monday, September 15, Bora was posted as Circle Officer in Kamrup district’s Goroimari.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Nupur Bora
It was her alleged conduct after her transfer to Barpeta that brought her under the state government’s scanner. Assam’s Barpeta is a Muslim-majority district. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that Bora made money from the alleged transfer of land from Hindu owners to Muslims.

“There is a lot of corruption happening in Assam’s minority-dominated revenue circles. We had been screening this officer for the past six months for transferring land belonging to Hindus to doubtful people. We have been observing her routine for six months now. While she was a circle officer in Barpeta, she was transferring Hindu’s lands to Muslims by taking money in return, and because of that, we are now taking stern action against her,” he alleged.
Nupur Bora’s social media trail
The latest post on Nupur Bora’s Facebook profile was two days ago, a picture of her standing below a structure with a thatched roof. Bora would post about her son and photos and videos from her home. Posts captured home improvement projects and time spent in nature or tending to the garden. One showed a wooden stand and a photo frame with the caption: “Handmade with love”.

But one post stands out. A collection of photos posted on April 17, 2022, shows Nupur Bora standing alongside CM Sarma. The caption reads: “With honourable CM sir and his family.”

There are many posts about ethnic wear for sale, including one showing a Bihu collection, with a WhatsApp number for placing orders. Handmade bamboo lights, embroidered cushion covers and tote bags up for sale have also share space with photos from her life as a civil servant.
Many of the Facebook posts also tag the Instagram account of Axomi (@theaxomiartstore), which is described as a clothing brand on the social media platform. Bora’s photos and videos, presumably wearing the brand’s offerings, have been posted and her Instagram handle tagged.
In a December 22, 2021 post, Bora wrote about a vaccination drive at Karbi Anglong district, mentioning how navigating the path is difficult at times. “Karbi Anglong is a large track of land with rich geographic, demographic and ethnic flavours what makes it reachable at times and sometimes contrary to it! In case of vaccination it was the later! I have seen people’s resistance, ignorance and received support and appreciation simultaneously.”

In a post from March in the same year, she also talks about the district, her “first place of posting as a civil servant”.
On January 2019, Bora posted three photos to her Facebook profile. One of them showed her standing next to a banner that reads: Joint Induction Training of ACA & Allied Services 2019″. The venue is the Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati’s Khanapura. Next month on February 8, Bora posted a text update: “Posted as assistant commissioner cum executive magistrate @Diphu”. This is one of the few posts about her professional trajectory.
