A woman content creator has been arrested in Tripura for allegedly spreading obscenity against political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Manik Saha on social media.
The online content creator, identified as Madhabi Biswas, was arrested on October 26. She was produced before a court and remanded in police custody for three days on Monday.
Biswas was booked over her Facebook remarks about Modi, Saha, former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder on different issues. Modi visited the state to inaugurate the redeveloped 524-year-old Tripurasundari Temple last month. Complaints were filed against her at various police stations in Agartala by BJP leaders and corporators.
A team of policewomen arrested Biswas at her home in Jogendranagar, West Tripura, on the basis of a complaint filed by one Paramita Ghoshal on October 26.
“A case was lodged against Madhabi Biswas under different provisions of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” said Rana Chatterjee, officer in charge of the West Agartala police station.
Meanwhile, the Tripura Human Rights Organisation condemned the arrest.
“Madhabi Biswas was targeted as she had opened her mouth against the Government. I am personally not in favour of any kind of obscenity or personal attack. The police who could not arrest drug traffickers even four days after registering an FIR were very fast in arresting Madhabi. We said in the court that this case is invalid… We hope that Madhabi will be released,” said Purushottam Ray Barman, a senior counsel and president of the organisation.
