The Tripura Fisheries Department Saturday distributed cash compensation to fish farmers who suffered losses during the floods last year.
Speaking at an event in Agartala, Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das said the government was committed to making Tripura self-reliant in fish production and doubling the income of fish farmers.
The cheques distributed ranged from Rs 6,800 to Rs 10,000. The farmers were also given ice boxes, among others.
According to the state government, 95 per cent of Tripura’s population consumes fish, requiring 1.15 lakh metric tons of fish annually.
While Tripura produced 85,000 metric tons of fish last year, the state still needed to import 30,000 metric tons of fish from adjoining Bangladesh and other Indian states.
