Tripura has the potential to emerge as a hub for IT and data in the Northeast owing to its accessibility to the international internet backbone via neighbouring Bangladesh and the availability of water and power, S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, said on Tuesday.
Krishnan said this while launching Tripura’s Cyber Security Policy 2025 and inaugurating a two-day workshop on Cyber Bharat Setu: Bridging States, Securing Bharat at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala.
“Tripura has the availability of adequate power and water and also has accessibility to international internet backbone via Bangladesh. These are good conditions to set up data centres. If this continues, Tripura can become a global data hub,” he said.
In reference to the recent hikes in US tariffs and restrictions on H-1B visas, Krishnan stated these would also pave the way for India, and states like Tripura, to host more global capability centres.
He laid emphasis on data privacy and cyber resilience as it is tough to verify whether sources of both hardware and software are trusted ones. He added that MeitY used trusted systems-on-chips in all CCTV systems and internet-enabled devices for protection from any breaches.
He praised Tripura’s initiative of launching a cyber policy and stressed coordination between central and state agencies to combat cyber threats and ensure safety in sectors like, banking, transportation, and healthcare etc. The policy will serve as a guiding framework to secure the state’s information technology and information and communications technology systems, strengthen institutional mechanisms and capacity building, and promote collaboration across public and private sectors, he added.
The workshop was organised by Tripura’s Directorate of Information Technology in collaboration with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

Cyber Bharat Setu
Cyber Bharat Setu envisioned a cyber-resilient India through fostering innovation and bridging capabilities of regional cybersecurity. The initiative will focus on sharing intelligence, capacity building, and coordinated efforts to safeguard digital infrastructure, national security, and the economy through workshops conducted to enhance organisational cyber preparedness.
CERT-In Director General Dr Sanjay Bahl, Chief Secretary J K Sinha, Director-General of Police Anurag Dhyankar, Information Technology Secretary Kiran Dinkarrao Gitte, and IT Director Jeya Ragul Geshan B, among others, also attended the event.
