Tripura’s ruling BJP on Monday condemned the derogatory words used for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during a protest that the Congress-RJD alliance held in Bihar over Rahul Gandhi’s “vote chori” allegations.
Speaking at a rally in Agartala, BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee said, “People of the country will never tolerate the gross insult and humiliation meted out by the Congress to the PM and his late mother. The Congress needs to tender a public apology for spreading confusion among people and insulting the prime minister’s late mother with expletives.”
Bhattacharjee criticised Gandhi and said his party and the CPM had been spreading propaganda against the BJP in Tripura.
Ministers including Sushanta Chowdhury, Sudhangshu Das, Bikash Debbarma, and Santana Chakma attended the rally along with other senior BJP leaders. The rally started in front of Maharani Tulsibati School—a prominent girls’ school that was started under the monarchical regime—and culminated in front of the Chowmuhani post office, where the state Congress’s headquarters is situated.
Participants in the rally raised slogans against the Congress leadership.
The man who allegedly made the derogatory remarks was arrested in Bihar, and the Congress has distanced itself from him.
Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans were deployed in large numbers in the area.

The BJP rally came days after the Congress held a protest in Agartala as part of its nationwide ‘Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod’ campaign against the Election Commission’s special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar. The Opposition party alleges massive irregularities in the exercise, which resulted in the deletion of 65 lakh voters from the electoral rolls, and accuses the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP to manipulate poll outcomes.
