In conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director of The Indian Express Group and Devendra Pandey, Deputy Associate Editor, “My wife’s name is saved as ‘the best decision of my life’”, Surya said to applause in the crowd. He jokes, “See all the husbands in the crowd were applauding.”
Surya then gives advice to all the husbands: “Aaplog bhi karlo (All of you too do it).”
“She has always been there behind the scenes. She doesn’t like making public appearances. I feel she was the best thing that happened to me,” Surya said. “She has played a huge role. She knew I was playing domestic cricket; she was following that when we were dating, also. She said you are playing at a good level, but what’s next? I said I want to play for India, and she said, Will you play just like that?
“Then I felt, oh, ok. Slowly, we started working on my time. Cutting out late nights. She said work hard Monday to Friday. On Saturday, Sunday, you take a break. Spend time with your family, spend time with me. Slowly, just like a plane taking off, cricket also took off,” the 35-year-old said.
Earlier speaking to this publication, Surya also revealed how his wife takes his phone from him well in advance, so that her husband doesn’t get distracted by chatter from the outside world. This ritual is part of the process Yadav follows to get into the sort of mindspace that helps him to blank out everything before he goes out to bat.
“When I go back to Mumbai and do it, I try and put a lot of pressure on myself whenever I’m going for a few practice sessions or playing a match scenario or doing anything in the game. So, for example, if I am targeting a few balls, and I have to get N number of runs, if I get out, I just come out (of the nets). That day, I don’t go in to bat again,” Yadav revealed.
