Ranked No. 104 after returning to the Top 100 in mid-February, Wawrinka has toggled between tour-level and ATP Challenger events since the 2025 season launched. He has hopes of getting one last chance to step out at the remaining three majors, having made the third round of the Australian Open, with a number of other tour stops on his radar.
“I’m playing next week Barcelona, then probably Rome (qualifying), Geneva. I will see if I have the chance to play Roland Garros,” Wawrinka shared.
“I would love to play something on the grass. Hopefully Wimbledon. Then I play Gstaad, Estoril. Hopefully I can play US Open. We will see if I play a tournament before, Cincinnati (qualifying) or maybe a challenger. After, we’ll see. Basel, for sure. Lyon also.”
While Basel would seem like a fitting place to tie the bow to one sensational chapter, it’s not necessarily Wawrinka’s end point either.
“There is big chance there,” he said with a smile. “But let’s see. Depends what’s the tournament after. Last year I played Athens. It was great, great, great tournament. I really enjoyed that. So might play the last one there. We’ll see.”
