Days after the blast near Red Fort, former Union home minister P Chidambaram said “we should ask ourselves what are the circumstances that turn Indian citizens — even educated persons — into terrorists”.
The blast on Monday killed nine people. Investigators suspect it was the handiwork of a transnational and interstate terror module in which a number of Kashmiri doctors were allegedly involved.
Chidambaram said Wednesday on X: “I have maintained before and after the Pahalgam terror attack that there are two kinds of terrorists — foreign-trained infiltrated terrorists and home-grown terrorists.”
“I said so in Parliament during the debate on Operation Sindoor. I was mocked and trolled for the reference to home-grown terrorists,” he posted. “However, I must say that the government observed a discreet silence because the government knows that there are home-grown terrorists too.”
In July, during the Parliamentary debate on Operation Sindoor, Chidambaram had said the Pahalgam attackers, “for all we know”, could be homegrown terrorists. He had also said “there is no evidence” that the terrorists came from Pakistan.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had then accused Chidambaram of effectively giving a “clean chit” to Pakistan with his remarks.
