Former India player Mohammad Kaif had high praise for Yashasvi Jaiswal, comparing his stats to the likes of cricketing icons like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar after 26 Test matches. He also said the 23-year-old will be the one to break the record of Virender Sehwag who is the only Indian to have more than one 300-run score with the 46-year-old notching up 2 triple hundreds.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal is a batsman with the patience to score big hundreds and set new marks. In his first 26 matches, his numbers are as good as Sachin and Virat. Scoring at high strike rate, his hundreds mostly put India on path to victory. Sehwag ka 300 wala record, Jaiswal hi todega,” Kaif said on X.
Jaiswal had powered India’s innings in the first day of the second Test vs West Indies in Delhi on Friday with the batter scoring a blistering century. Jaiswal’s ton came in just 145 balls as he became just the second batsman after South Africa legend Graeme Smith to have scored seven Test hundreds as an opener before the age of 24. Additionally, only Tendulkar had scored more centuries than Jaiswal before the age of 24.

The young batter would resume India’s innings on Day 2 and score 175 runs before departing after getting run out. After that, skipper Shubman Gill led the way with his 10th century and then the captain gave his strike-bowler Ravindra Jadeja enough time to tighten the noose on West Indies as India galloped towards another comprehensive in the second Test on Saturday.
Gill (129 not out) cruised to his century in the post-lunch session but without caring for an easy double hundred which looked inevitable against a poor bowling attack.
He declared the Indian innings with hosts reaching 518 for five, one hour into post lunch session.
What stood out on the day was how ‘Gill the batter’ and ‘Gill the skipper’ were in perfect sync.
The skipper didn’t let the ‘batter’ take over in pursuit of personal glory even though there was enough time at his disposal to beef up his personal statistics.

Despite the pitch not having any significant wear and tear, it was still good enough for Ravindra Jadeja (3/37) to work his magic in tandem with Kuldeep Yadav (1/45), reducing West Indies to 140 for four in 43 overs.
