Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “is frightened of Trump”. Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s assertion that India has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, he said that PM Modi kept writing congratulatory messages (on X) for Trump despite his snubs (on tariffs and India-Pakistan ceasefire claims).
He said that PM Modi “canceled the Finance Minister’s visit to America” and “doesn’t contradict him on Operation Sindoor”.

What did Trump say?
Trump on Thursday said he had anged to convince PM Modi to stop buying oil from Russia. “Some would be in there for a few months and this was year after year after year and my friend has been there now for a long time and he’s assured me there will be no oil purchases from Russia…He’s not buying his oil from Russia…He can’t do it immediately. It’s a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over soon,” Trump said.
However, there is no confirmation from the Centre of such an agreement being in place.
