Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the Shaurya Yatra at Somnath in Gujarat on Thursday as part of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv celebrations.
The ceremonial procession, that featured 108 horses, was organised to honour valiant warriors who defended the historic temple through centuries.

The event also commemorated nearly a millennium of Somnath temple’s civilisational and cultural heritage. It drew large crowds of devotees and local residents to the coastal shrine town of Somnath.
Standing on a special vehicle, PM Modi waved to the people during the one-kilometre procession with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The event is being held to remember the countless citizens of India who have made sacrifices to defend the Somnath temple, which continues to inspire the cultural consciousness of future generations.
The programme marks 1,000 years since Mahmud of Ghazni’s attack in 1026 and honours those who protected the temple.

The Somnath Swabhiman Parv is being organised from January 8-11 as a commemoration marking 1,000 years since the first recorded attack on the Temple which has the first of the 12 jyotirlingas, in January 1026.
