Michigan State defender Colin Ralph celebrates a goal against Penn State on Nov. 8, 2025.

The No. 1 team in the country continues to roll, sweeping a weekend series over No. 3 Penn State to open Big Ten play undefeated. The Spartans blanked the Nittany Lions, 5-0, in Game 2 to secure the sweep and earn their fourth win against a top-three team this season.

Goaltender Trey Augustine was excellent in the series, stopping 59 of 60 shots he faced and recording his third shutout in seven starts. Charlie Stramel had four points in Game 2 (2G, 2A), including the game-winning goal in the first period as the Spartans rolled over PSU.

Penn State falls to 9-3-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in Big Ten play. MSU improves to 7-1-0 and starts 2-0-0 in conference play. Penn State returns home next weekend for another top-ranked Big Ten matchup against Michigan, while MSU heads to South Bend to take on Notre Dame.

Thank you for joining us this weekend for our coverage of this exciting top-three matchup.

Anthony Romani gets his second goal of the weekend, FINALLY converting on the powerplay with a rip from the top of the circle, short side over the shoulder of Fleming.

Michigan State will remain on the powerplay as the goal was scored during a 5-on-3 PP.

11:11 pm, November 8, 2025

After the Penn State powerplay was cut short by a hooking penalty, the Nittany Lions pulled their goalie for an extra skater.

The Spartans put this one away shortly after—Charlie Stramel gets his second of the night with an empty netter.

11:05 pm, November 8, 2025

We’ve reached a boiling point at Munn Ice Arena. PSU’s Jerod Crespo and MSU’s Ryker Lee have been ejected after a spirited scrap after the whistle. Penn State comes out of it with a powerplay, though, in a fortunate turn of events for the Nittany Lions as they try to come back against the No. 1 Spartans.

10:54 pm, November 8, 2025

It was a quick 10 minutes to start the third period, and Michigan State likes it that way as the Spartans hold on to a three-goal lead in the final frame. Penn State has had some chances, putting nine shots on Augustine, but the clock is not on the Nittany Lions’ side as time is running out on the comeback effort.

10:43 pm, November 8, 2025

The third period is underway in East Lansing. Can Penn State mount a comeback? Or will Michigan State complete the sweep?

All will be decided in the final 20 minutes of this top-three matchup.

10:17 pm, November 8, 2025

It’s all Michigan State this afternoon—the Spartans have scored three unanswered goals and have held Penn State scoreless through 40 minutes. MSU holds a decent lead in shots, 32-24 after outshooting the Nittany Lions 17-12 in the second.

Colin Ralph had the lone goal of the second period on a seeing-eye shot from the point for his first as a Spartan.

Both teams had a pair of powerplay chances in the second period, but the penalty killers continue to hold strong. MSU goaltender Trey Augustine has played lights-out hockey so far, stopping all 23 PSU shots.

10:11 pm, November 8, 2025

It was only a matter of time before Michigan State scored again—the Spartans have dominated the second period, outshooting PSU 13-5 in the second frame.

Sophomore defenseman Colin Ralph gets his first goal as a Spartan off a point shot that finds its way through traffic and past Fleming to give Michigan State a three-goal lead.

9:56 pm, November 8, 2025

Michigan State has controlled play through the first four minutes of the second period, outshooting the Nittany Lions 7-0 so far as the Spartans look to extend their lead.

But don’t count out Penn State. Charlie Cerrato JUST barely rang one off the post as he nearly had PSU’s first goal of the game.

9:40 pm, November 8, 2025

It was a mostly even period, with MSU holding a slight edge in shots, 15-12. But the offense has been in Michigan State’s favor as the Spartans lead 2-0 after 20 minutes. Charlie Stramel opened the scoring early with a wrister from the circle past Josh Fleming, and he added an assist late in the period on Porter Martone’s goal.

Game 2 has seen a continuation of the physicality from yesterday’s game, with lots of post-whistle scrums and extracurricular activities. The powerplays continue to struggle, however, as both units have been held off the scoresheet all weekend. PSU had two PPs in the first period, and MSU had one, but neither could convert on the man advantage.

Second period action is coming right up from East Lansing.

9:37 pm, November 8, 2025

Michigan State makes it a two-goal game late in the first period. The Spartans get their second tally of the day as Charlie Stramel slides a slick feed over to Porter Martone, who deposits it into the open net for his fourth of the season.

9:16 pm, November 8, 2025

Penn State kills off the first MSU powerplay of the day. Neither PP has scored a goal this weekend—and not for a shortage of opportunities.

After another scuffle at center ice, Penn State heads back to the powerplay as MSU’s Patrick Geary gets a minor penalty for head contact.

9:13 pm, November 8, 2025

The Spartans killed off the first Penn State powerplay, keeping the NIttany Lions’ PP scoreless on the weekend. Now MSU will get its first chance on the man advantage today as Reese Laubach heads to the box for tripping.

9:08 pm, November 8, 2025

It didn’t take long for the Spartans to get on the board, as MSU’s top line opens the scoring just 2:31 into the game.

On the rush, Charlie Stramel rips a wrist shot past Josh Fleming for his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Porter Martone and Matt Basgall.

Shortly after, Martone was called for an interference penalty, so Penn State will get a chance to tie it up with an early powerplay.

9:04 pm, November 8, 2025

Michigan State won the opening draw, and we are underway in East Lansing.

The physicality from Game 1 is already continuing this afternoon, as the two teams get into a scrum after the whistle, just 56 seconds in.
