Manchester weather update, India vs England Test day 5: Despite putting on a record Test total at Old Trafford and even reducing India to 0/2 after stacking up a 311-run first-innings lead, Ben Stokes’ England walked into stumps on Saturday with swelling frustration after a stunning third-wicket unbroken partnership from Shubman Gill and KL Rahul.
Picking up from the ruins of two first-over jolts from Chris Woakes, removing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks, India rebuilt the innings with the steely resolve of Rahul and Gill. The right-handed pair became the first duo in history to record a 150-plus partnership for the third wicket after coming together with the score still reading zero. While Rahul went past Virat Kohli’s run tally in England to become India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the country, the Karnataka batter also marked his first-ever 500-run series across a career spanning over a decade. Meanwhile, unbeaten on 78, Gill also became the third India batter ever after Sunil Gavaskar and Yashasvi Jaiswal to aggregate more than 700 runs in a series.
Will rain come to India’s assistance?
Despite finishing the day at 178/2, India will be wary of the consequences that lie ahead of them on Sunday as they trail England by 137 runs with eight wickets in hand. Conditions are predicted to remain overcast with chances of rain increasing from the previous day.
According to the UK Met Office department, rain is likely to persist throughout the morning in Manchester with chances of rainfall peaking at 11 AM, an hour into the morning session. However, the Met department predicts the weather to be carrying “light rain changing to sunny intervals by late morning.”
