Kansas State’s win streak is now 14 straight games following home wins over Arizona and Arizona State last week, earning NCAA.com Team of the Week honors.
The Wildcats improved to 19-1 overall and 7-0 in Big 12 Conference play, marking the second straight season and just the second time in program history that Kansas State has opened a season with a 19-1 record. The 14-game win streak is tied for the second-longest win streak in program history and matches last season’s 14-game win streak.
In Sunday’s 81-69 home win over Arizona State, the Wildcats used a sterling perimeter attack in the second half, connecting on seven 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory. The Wildcats equaled their season-high from the 3-point line by making 13 of 24 attempts (.542).
Against Arizona State, Kansas State featured four players in double figures led by senior forward Temira Poindexter with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field including 5-of-7 from long range, five rebounds and four assists. In her last three games, Poindexter is 12-of-25 (.480) from behind the three-point line. Joining Poindexter was senior guard Serena Sundell, with 15 points, five assists and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Taryn Sides led a Kansas State bench that outscored Arizona State’s bench, 22-5, with 11 points, six assists and three rebounds. Senior guard Jaelyn Glenn notched 10 points, all in the second half, on 4-of-4 shooting, three rebounds and two assists.
Earlier in the week on Jan. 16, Kansas State held off an upset bid by Arizona at home before winning 62-47. Sundell joined an exclusive scoring club in program history during the game. The national leader in assists and assists per game, Sundell led Kansas State with 16 points, eight assists, four rebounds, a block and a steal. With her point total, Sundell surpassed the 1,500-point mark (1,507) in her career, becoming the 14th player in Wildcat program history to reach the milestone. Joining Sundell in double figures was Poindexter with 14 points, while senior center Ayoka Lee chipped in on the defensive end by tying her career-high and equaling the school record for blocks in a conference game with eight. The eight blocks were tied for the most in any game by a Big 12 team this season and were the most in a league game this season. She also carded six rebounds, two steals and six points.
Kansas State’s only setback this season came on Nov. 25, when the Wildcats dropped a 73-62 decision to Duke in the opening game of the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic in Henderson, Nevada. Overall Kansas State has been dominant this season, averaging 83.2 points per game, while allowing opponents only 52.0. The Wildcats have won all seven of the Big 12 games by double digits.
Up to No. 10 in the latest Associated Press Top-25 Women’s College Basketball Poll, the Wildcats will return to action on Jan. 25 at Colorado.
