Mutua Madrid Open Match Preview
Most fans have come to know Fonseca by now. What about Moller? The Dane is just three years older than the Brazilian phenom, and has also been on a winning run. Most recently, the 21-year-old took out three of the top four seeds at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Oeiras en route to the title. It was his second career title on the circuit, and with it he jumped 34 spots to a career-high No. 114 in the rankings.
Fonseca, who has also won a Challenger title this season—at the loaded Phoenix event, filled with early departures from Indian Wells—is just off his career-high No. 59, and this could be the last clay-court swing he’s unseeded for decades. He’s already earned the respect of some of the sport’s biggest names, and the center court placements that comes with it.
These two have never played each other, but Moller will still have nothing to lose. Still, Fonseca feels like he’s already arrived. Jack Draper and Jakub Mensik made their big breakthroughs at Masters 1000 events in March. Could Jaoa do the same in May, on clay? Winner: Fonseca—Ed McGrogan
