The two had a back-and-forth start to the final on Sunday, with Fonseca grabbing the first break en route to a 3-0 lead but Davidovich Fokina getting that break back to close in to 3-2.
But from there Fonseca regained control, breaking again for 4-2 and eventually riding that break to the 40-minute first set.
Fonseca then broke again in the first game of the second set and the two held from there until it was over, and the Brazilian teenager served it out in style—a forehand winner for 15-0, an ace for 30-0, a service winner for 40-0 and then a huge backhand to close it out.
That last game was indicative of the entire match, really, as he finished with 29 total winners—including a whopping 20 off his forehand side—to a total of just 19 unforced errors.
“Man, it’s crazy,” Fonseca said afterwards in his on-court interview. “We’ve been through a lot, so I just want to thank my family, and my coaches that helped me achieve this amazing effort.
“My parents just came from Brazil—they were actually going to Paris, and then they just changed their flights and came here, like, one hour before the match with my uncles, so it’s just amazing to have them all here for my biggest title of my career.
“It’s a pleasure playing on this court, and it’s a pleasure playing this tournament, and I’m just very happy.”
