South African batter Dewald Brevis decimated the Australian bowling attack to hit a 41-ball century during the second T20I between both sides at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Tuesday, becoming the youngest centurion from his country in this format. Known as Baby AB (on South African great AB de Villiers) for his range-hitting abilities and playing style, Brevis set the stage on fire with his 56-ball 125-run innings.
The 22-year-old hit 12 fours and eight sixes and ended up scoring the highest individual total by a South African in this format. His blitzkrieg knock helped South Africa post a massive total of 218 runs. Brevis’ 41-ball ton is also the second fastest T20I century by a South African.
De Villiers heaped praises on Brevis and said Indian Premier League teams missed a ‘golden opportunity’ to pick this young hitter. De Villiers wrote on X, “There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. The boy can play.”

He added: “Mind boggling that he wasn’t picked up at all! To think that he came in as an injury sub.”
Brevis’ arrival in IPL 2025 is a story in itself. Drafted in mid-season as an injury replacement by Chennai Super Kings, Brevis’s impact was immediate on CSK’s otherwise poor season.
In the three-match T20I series, Australia are leading 1-0 after winning the first match by 17 runs, where Tim David shone with the bat and scored 83, while South African opener Ryan Ricelton’s half-century went in vain.
