Indian Railways Ticket Booking: Indian Railways (IR) has introduced several measures to enhance online ticket booking for passengers. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the digital arm of IR, manages the advanced e-ticketing system for train bookings, PNR status checks, as well as catering and hospitality services at stations. Notably, around 87.78 per cent of all reserved train tickets are booked through the IRCTC portal.
During IRCTC’s earnings conference call in August, Sudhir Kumar, Director (Finance) and CFO, highlighted the importance of internet ticketing: “The first segment is Internet Ticketing. This segment continued to be solid revenue driver for the company. Revenue from this segment has stood at INR360 crores, marking a 9.12% growth on year-on-year basis. 87.78% of total reserved tickets on Indian Railways are now booked through our portal.”
IRCTC Ticket Booking Status
As one of the country’s largest train ticket reservation platforms, IRCTC handled an impressive booking volume in the first quarter of FY 2025-26. On average, 13.88 lakh tickets were booked daily. Multiplying this daily average by 91 days (April–June) gives a total of 12.63 crore tickets booked in Q1FY26.
Clarifying this during the same call, Sanjay Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of IRCTC, said: “We have booked 13.88 lakh tickets, this daily average. You see this quarter, we have booked 12.63 crores of ticket.”
IRCTC Ticket Booking Discount
The newly launched 20 per cent discount on ticket bookings for Diwali and Chhath puja is expected to give a further boost to IRCTC’s ticketing business.
“I must compliment Ministry of Railways for bringing this 20% discount in this festive season of Diwali and Chhath. And simultaneously, I must tell you, that we have no impact on our convenience fee because both — we will be having 2 PNRs, one for onward journey, another is for return journey.
And convenience fee, we’ll be charging the same rate. So this will certainly add to our business because of running of many trains, but no impact on our revenue,” Jain added.
