Iga Swiatek on Saturday steamrolled Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 to win her maiden title at Wimbledon and her sixth Grand Slam title overall. The match lasted just 57 minutes and Swiatek is the first player in the Open era to have won the women’s singles final at Wimbledon without dropping a game.
Swiatek first became the first player since 1983 to have won the opening set of a Wimbledon women’s singles final without dropping a game. Swiatek broke her American opponent in the opening game and added two more breaks to clinch the set in 25 minutes. She went on to become the first player since 1911 to win the match without dropping a game.
This season marked the first time that Swiatek managed to make it past the quarterfinal at Wimbledon. She has won the French Open four times (in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024) and the US Open once in 2022. It means she is one Australian Open win away from becoming the 11th woman to complete a Career Grand Slam
Swiatek’s win marks the eighth consecutive time that a new women’s singles champion has been crowned at Wimbledon, a streak that started after Serena Williams defender her title in 2016. The tournament this year originally had former champions like Elena Rybakina, Marketa Vondrousova, and a throwback contender in Petra Kvitova, who was the only 2-time winner in the main draw and bid an emotional farewell this year. And of course, there was the defending champion Barbora Krejcikova.
But there were early defeats of Rybakina and Krejcikova on Saturday too which officially marked the end of any former winners’ presence. Former World No.1 Swiatek and current World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka are the only two players able to reach the Fourth Round at each of the last four Women’s Singles Grand Slam events according to Opta. Sabalenka was knocked out by Anisimova in the semi-finals.
