Manchester United’s loss to Grimsby Town on penalties in the Carabao Cup marked the first time that they had been eliminated from any tournament by a side from the fourth tier of English football. It was also their 17th loss under manager Ruben Amorim since November last year and the 39-year-old Portuguese manager felt that ‘something has to change’ post the dramatic loss.
“I am shocked because we are in the moment when we make a lot of changes. We try to fight a lot of things but then when we have these moments, we need to show up. If we don’t show up, you can feel that something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again,” Amorim told ITV.
United had finished 15th in the Premier League last season. With Amorim taking charge of the team last November replacing Erik ten Hag, United had finished last season Premier League campaign with 11 wins, nine draws and 18 losses. Post the season, Manchester United had signed a new frontline attack in Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško and Matheus Cunha. The club had started this year’s premie League with a 0-1 loss against Arsenal followed by a 1-1 draw against Fulham on Sunday last week.
United were down 0-2 after goals by Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren at Blundell Park on Wednesday night before Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back with 15 minutes to go in the match. Harry Maguire scored the equaliser in the 89th minute before the match went into penalties. As each team’s 11 took penalties, only Clarke Oduor for Grimsby and Matheus Cunha for United missed their penalties with the teams taking penalties again with the scores level at 10-10. Jaze Kabia then scored for Grimsby followed by Bruno Fernandes scoring for United. Darragh Burn scored then for Grimsby before Mbeumo’s second spot-kick of the penalties hit against the crossbar handing Grimsby the 12-11 win via penalties. Amorim termed Grimsby as the ‘only team that was on the pitch’ post the loss.
“It doesn’t matter if we recover (from 2-0 down) or not. It’s the signs the team made during the game. The beginning of the game. I know that the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose, because one team can win against any group of players. I think the team and the players spoke really loud today. That’s it. We lost. The best team won,” Amorim told Sky Sports.
When asked about what he meant by his players ‘spoke really loud’, the United Manager explained further. “It’s really clear what they spoke. Let’s move on from this day. I think it was really clear for everybody what happened today. It’s not just the space, but the way we started the game without any intensity. All the ideas of the pressure, we were completely lost. It’s hard to explain. That’s what they spoke really loud. Is it the same as last season?
“That is the problem. When you lose but you see something new, it’s different. When you see something different like today, it’s hard to talk about that. I just want to say I’m really sorry to the fans. The support they give me, the support that they are always, with all the defeats, with the team, today I have nothing to say apart from sorry. I think they gave the response on the pitch today. Now, we have a game in the weekend and then two weeks off. We will solve things out,” Amorim added.

United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who was making his first appearance of the season, had a disastrous 90 minutes in the match as he missed the Vernam’s strike near the post in the 22nd minute of the match before missing his punch at a cross resulting in Warren’s tap-in in the 30th minute of the match. Amorim defended the goal-keeper post the match. “With all due respect, when you play against a fourth division team, it’s not the goalkeeper, it’s everything. It’s the environment, it’s the way we face the competition. We know that in the moment, people will pay attention to everything, it’s massive – every detail. We showed that performance today. My players spoke for me, really loud.” Amorim told Sky Sports.
