Senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal was on Wednesday appointed as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), while former Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor was named as the Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), succeeding incumbent Praveen Kumar, who will head the Border Security Force (BSF).
Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, was holding the additional charge of NIA DG’s post since last month after his predecessor Sadanand Vasant Date was repatriated to parent cadre Maharashtra.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Aggarwal’s appointment for a tenure up to August 31, 2028, the date of his superannuation, an order of the Department of Personnel & Training said.
Kapoor, a 1990-batch IPS officer of Haryana cadre, was relieved of Haryana Police chief’s post last month—two months after he was sent on leave amid controversy surrounding the suicide of senior IPS officer
Y Puran Kumar. He was later posted as the Chairman of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation.
Kapoor was appointed the DGP (Haryana) in August 2023 during the reign of chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, superseding two 1989-batch IPS officers Mohd Akhil and R C Mishra.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared Kapoor’s appointment as the ITBP chief up to October 31, 2026, the date of his superannuation.

A 1993-batch IPS officer of West Bengal cadre, Praveen Kumar has been appointed as the next BSF chief up to September 30, 2030, the date of his retirement, the order said.
