Bridge Collapses in India: Bridge collapses – whether under construction or fully built – are unfortunately not uncommon in India. In the first six months of 2025 alone, several major bridges have collapsed across the country. Last year, nearly 12 bridges collapsed in Bihar within a span of just 20 days. The exact reasons behind these incidents remain unclear – whether due to poor maintenance, low construction materials, or other structural issues.

Gambhira bridge in Vadodara
On July 9, a total of nine persons, including a child, were killed and several others rescued after a portion of a four-decade-old bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Vadodara district. According to PTI, a slab of the Gambhira bridge, located on Mahisagar river which connects central Gujarat to the Saurashtra region of the state, collapsed. According to the reports, the bridge was constructed in 1985, and its maintenance was carried out periodically as and when required.
Indrayani River bridge collapse in Pune
On June 15, four persons died and 18 others were seriously injured after an old iron pedestrian bridge on the Indrayani river collapsed near Pune. The incident occurred at 3:30 pm in the Kundamala area, saw heavy rains over the past few days and is a popular tourist spot.
Bullet train gantry in Ahmedabad
On March 23, a massive gantry, used to install concrete girders between pillars on the bullet train line, slipped from its place while being retracted, leading to its collapse. “One of the Segmental Launching gantry used for viaduct construction in Vatva (near Ahmedabad) was retracting after completing launching of concrete girder. It accidentally skid from its position. This has affected the adjoining railway line in the vicinity,” the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) said in a statement.
