Charlie Chapman: Exeter Chiefs sign scrum-half from Gloucester for 2025-26

Exeter Chiefs have signed scrum-half Charlie Chapman from Gloucester for next season.

The 26-year-old has been with the Cherry and Whites since the age of 14 and has made more than 90 appearances for the club since his senior debut in 2018.

He will have competition from scrum-half, and former Gloucester team-mate, Stephen Varney, who will also move to Sandy Park next season.

“I’m extremely excited to join Exeter Chiefs,” Chapman said.

“Chiefs are a team with a rich history of success, and they have an extremely passionate fan base. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Chapman was named Gloucester’s Young Player of the Season in 2021-22 and has represented Scotland at under-20 level.

Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter said: “He’s got great physical attributes – great pace, very high fitness – so we think he could be very good at adding tempo and speed to what we’re wanting to do and how we want to play in attack.”

Exeter have not disclosed the length of Chapman’s contract, but he will also be joined at Sandy Park next season by Australian hooker Julian Heaven, and back-rower Tom Hooper.

Chiefs are looking to strengthen after a disappointing campaign – they sit second-bottom of the Premiership with five games left.

“There are some things we’re going to do moving forward to create a fresh start,” added Baxter.

“With Rob Hunter as new head coach and a new coach coming in, we feel bringing in players to add to our existing squad competition and add to how we want to play will be great additions for us.”
