The WTA 500 Credit Open Charleston Open is one of the most historic stops on the WTA tour, boasting a who’s-who of former champions since it began in 1973. But ahead of the 2025 event, the tournament was left backtracking after its officially website accidentally included the retired Ashleigh Barty among this year’s competitors.
Longtime tennis journalist Christopher Clarey noted the error on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday by posting a screenshot of the tournament’s official website, which very clearly noted “world No. 1” Barty at the top of its player field as a wild-card entry.
There was just one problem: Barty is not only quit the game for good after winning the 2022 Australian Open, and has rejected any notion of a third tour of duty in professional tennis. She is also currently pregnant with her second child. Already a mom to nearly 2-year-old Hayden, the three-time Grand Slam champion and her husband, golfer Garry Kissick, announced on Christmas Day in December that they’re becoming a family of four this year.
