The Centre on Friday ordered an investigation by retired Supreme Court judge B S Chauhan into the violence in Leh that led to four deaths during protests demanding statehood for Ladakh.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a statement that the probe will look into the circumstances behind the serious law and order situation that led to police action and the deaths.
“In order to ensure an impartial inquiry, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, today [Friday, October 17], notified a judicial inquiry to be conducted by Hon’ble Dr Justice B S Chauhan, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, into the circumstances leading to the serious law and order situation, the police action and the resultant unfortunate death of the four individuals,” the statement said.
“We are confident that continuous dialogue would yield the desired results in near future. The government stands committed to the aspiration of the people of Ladakh,” the statement said.
The Ministry also notified that Chauhan will be assisted by retired judge Mohan Singh Parihar as judicial secretary and Tushar Anand as administrative secretary.
The clashes between security personnel and agitators demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh left four dead and dozens injured.
Two days after the violence, the Union Territory’s police arrested activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly instigating the protestors and transferred him to Jodhpur Central Jail.
