Let’s face it, March Madness takes over the sports world from mid-March to early April.

Whether that’s an unwavering conviction in one of many brackets submitted, rooting for the annual Cinderella story, or in this year’s case, watching four powerhouses fight for the crown, any sports news outside of the tournaments is placed on the backburner.

And now that both are over and fans have returned to reality, there’s a lot to catch up on, especially in the college baseball season.

Here are six storylines to help college baseball fans get up to speed on what they missed during March Madness.

16 midweek, 15 series unranked upsets

A major element that makes March Madness special is the shock value, the unexpected upsets where a small-town school takes down a well-known blue blood.

There weren’t many of those in this year’s tournaments, potentially because of the boatload on the diamond. The sport saw 16 midweek upsets and 15 series upsets where an unranked team beat a ranked one. Eight were suffered by top 10 ranked teams: five midweek, three series.

Two of the biggest upsets came at the hands of the top two teams in the country at the time. Missouri State came back to beat then-No. 2 Arkansas in extras after a five-run ninth inning, while Wake Forest knocked off then-No. 5 Florida State 2-1, outscoring them 33-7.

Last year’s college baseball season was a completely different story, featuring just six midweek upsets between March 16 to April 7.

WEEK 8 RANKINGS: Arkansas moves to No. 1 in college baseball Power 10 rankings

Three combined no-hitters, one perfect game

UNCW's Cam Bagwell

No-hitters have been a common theme for the 2025 season, happening in what feels like every other week and sometimes on the same day.

And the train didn’t slow down for March Madness. There were three combined no-hitters and a perfect game from mid-March to early April. The combined no-nos included North Carolina (first since 1999), UNLV (first since 2003) and Tennessee, who recorded its second of the season.

UNCW freshman right-hander Cam Bagwell etched his name in the record books with the 39th ever perfect game in Division I college baseball.

Although the seventh perfect game in the last six years, it was the first since 2019 to come during March Madness.

Florida and Texas A&M have a combined four SEC wins

After strong 2024 seasons and reloaded rosters, a return to Omaha was arguably expected for both Texas A&M and Florida — ranked No.1 and No.11 in D1baseball’s preseason rankings, respectively.

Those hopes have washed away, as both teams’ chances of postseason play are in jeopardy.

The Aggies and Gators combined for just four wins in the SEC during March Madness — two during the Final Four weekend where TAMU beat then-No. 1 Tennessee 2-1 in a rematch of the 2024 MCWS championship series.

The two teams have struggled to find a rhythm, blowing numerous leads and losing in large margins. They have 20 conference losses in total.

Each season, the juggernaut conference produces teams that rise to the top unexpectedly and others that underperform. Texas A&M and Florida have fallen victim to the latter.

Florida State’s Alex Lodise makes baseball history

Some moments in sports are unimaginable. So unrealistic that a movie writer wouldn’t dare create it.

Florida State junior shortstop Alex Lodise brought the unthinkable to life, hitting a walk-off grand slam to complete the cycle, the first player to conquer this feat in college and Major League Baseball history.

Even better? The grand slam lifted the Seminoles over in-state rival Florida, winning 8-4 in the second game of the Sunshine Showdown series.

The St. Augustine, FL native’s one swing solidified his legacy in the rivalry and sport’s history books.

Georgia eyeing DI single-season home run record

LSU’s record of 188 home runs in a season (70 games) is one to stare at, admire, and immediately think that no one will come close to breaking it. It’s hard to imagine another team one-upping such a massacre.

Enter Georgia.

The Bulldogs hit 34 homers during March Madness, hitting at least one in 11 of their 12 games, which upped their total to 87 on the season at the time — 10 more than second-place Tennessee.

The 1997 Tigers averaged 2.68 big flies per game, and Georgia currently sits at 2.63 with 92 home runs through 35 games. Keep an eye on the Bulldogs and their high-powered bats.

Yale’s Jack Ohman scoreless pitching streak ends after 35.1 innings

Yale freshman right-hander Jack Ohman has lived the dream of every first-year college pitcher, starting his collegiate career with the best ERA in college baseball. Before March Madness, Ohman had gone 14.1 innings without giving up an earned run and kept it up until April.

The freshman threw 22 innings during between mid-March and early April before the scoreless streak was snapped, just hours before the first Final Four matchup on April 4. He gave up a solo home run against Brown in the sixth inning, ending the run at 35.1 innings.

He still holds the best ERA in the country at 0.23 and has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week three times.
