K Kavitha, a Bharat Rashtra Samithi MLC and daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was suspended from the party with immediate effect on Tuesday afternoon. The decision was taken a day after Kavitha issued statements against her cousin and former Telangana minister T Harish Rao and BRS Rajya Sabha MP Santosh Kumar on Monday evening.
Sources close to Kavitha indicated that she is likely to resign from the party membership and her position as MLC following disciplinary action against her.
Kavitha had also lashed out against her brother KTR, without naming him, in May.
A notice issued by BRS’s disciplinary committee, headed by Soma Bharat Kumar and T Ravinder Rao, states that Kavitha’s conduct and anti-party activities in recent times caused damage to the party. “The party leadership has taken the issue seriously. Party president K Chandrashekar Rao has suspended Kavitha with immediate effect,” the notice reads.
The notice was signed by the disciplinary committee leaders and not KCR or BRS working president KT Rama Rao.
A party source told the Indian Express, “Ever since she issued a statement against two stalwarts of the party, the BRS has been contemplating what should be done. On Monday and Tuesday, the top leadership of the party deliberated and came to a decision, with the blessings of party president KCR.”
Kavitha was unavailable for comment.
The BRS high drama is unfolding a day after Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced in the Telangana legislative assembly that the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) probe will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation. By Monday evening, Kavitha trained her guns on cousin and former irrigation minister T Harish Rao in a press conference and claimed that her father KCR’s name was being “dragged through the mud because of some people who have benefitted from being around him”.
Kavitha claimed Harish Rao was “responsible for the CBI inquiry” against KCR. “How is it possible that the same people are still leading the party?” Kavitha said. “Harish Rao, who served as irrigation minister for five years… does he not have a role in this? He is responsible for the allegations which are being levelled against KCR now.”
“Another such person is Megha Krishna Reddy (builder and industrialist). And former Rajya Sabha MP (Santosh Kumar). While KCR had been working for the people of Telangana, these people worked for their own benefit, for amassing wealth for themselves,” she alleged.
BRS sources said that soon after Kavitha’s statements aired on news channels, the BRS top leadership huddled together at KCR’s residence in Hyderabad’s outskirts. “The decision was taken with KCR garu’s permission,” a source said.
