The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday announced the schedule for the election of its national president.

The process will take into account the six-year tenure of the current national president and Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, with the announcement of his successor scheduled on January 20, the date Nadda officially took over the position in 2020.

BJP MP and national returning officer K Laxman opened the nomination process, stating that nominations for the post will be accepted from Monday morning. This will be followed by a review of the nominations by potential candidates on January 19. The results will be announced after internal polling, if necessary.

Sources indicate that this stipulation was included because 45-year-old Nitin Nabin, the BJP’s national working president and a former minister in Bihar, is expected to be the sole candidate for the position based on the national leadership’s decision. If elected, he will be the youngest person to hold the post.

According to party insiders, around 300 national office-bearers from across the country, mandated to vote in the election of the national president, would reach the capital over the weekend to be part of the process. These individuals would include legislators from MLAs to Members of both Houses of Parliament, current and former state presidents, and leaders of various morchas and other internal bodies eligible to vote.

The Indian Express, on January 1, reported that the election process for the BJP’s national president was likely to be announced after Makar Sankranti, with Nadda’s successor expected to be named by January 20.
