Australia beat South Africa by 17 runs in the first of the three-match T20I series in Darwin. Chasing 179 runs, South Africa were restricted to 161/9 from 20 overs. Ryan Rickelton was the top scorer for South Africa with a 55-ball 71. Josh Hazlewood and Ben Dwarshuis have picked up three wickets each.

Earlier, South African skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first. Australia were in a bit of trouble losing a few early wickets; however, Tim David scored a 52-ball 83 to take the hosts to 178 from 20 overs. Kwena Maphaka was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa with four wickets.
With the result, Australia takes a 1-0 lead. The second T20I is scheduled on Tuesday at the same venue. The three-match T20I series will be followed by a match ODI series for South Africa.
