Daniil Medvedev wasn’t the only one who had a spectacular implosion at the US Open, when a photographer tresspassed the playing area.
Earlier, during Jordan Thompson’s first-round victory at the US Open, Frenchman Corentin Moutet, his opponent actually got disturbed by a fan talking away advice to the players and managed to ruckus and get the loud mouth thrown out.
Umpire James Keothavong told the fan, wearing a Socceroos or Matildas jersey to not talk “directly at the player” in the first set on sidecourt 7 at 3-2 in the second set. An annoyed Moutet had directed his celebration towards that same section of the stands, where all the talking emanated from, according to ABC.net.au.
It had been a see-sawing match between two combustible opponents, ABC wrote, which Australian star Thompson won out 6-2, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 55 minutes. The aural distraction made it raucous, as the rest of the crowd applauded the eviction. On Court 7 at Flushing Meadows, spectators are effectively on court level with the players, says ABC.
Moutet reckoned someone in the crowd was speaking at him during the final game of the first set and umpire James Keothavong had to step in. “Buddy, please don’t talk to the players please,” he said.
The Frenchman proceeded to call a medical timeout after losing the opening set 6-2 to Thompson and was struggling physically while the jabbering went on. After holding serve for a 3-2 lead in the second frame, Moutet directed an angry celebration back at that corner of the crowd. His coaches, sitting in the same section, had a tough time calming him down as he gesticulated past them, before approaching the umpire pointing to the crowd.
The umpire then walked towards the fan, wearing a gold Australian Socceroos or Matildas jersey from 2018, and asked the fan to leave. Surrounding fans were delighted, and started applauding and cheering. They chanted “Nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, goodbye.”

The Australian fan shouted back at the fans while collecting his belongings and left the arena.
Thompson stated focussed and won the second 6-4 win in the second set, before Moutet made a comeback. Nowvit was the Aussie’s turn to act crazy. He launched a ball into the stands after being broken for 4-0, and the French world number 40 took a 5-0 lead before taking the set 6-1, even as Thompson copped a code violation.
Moutet reached 3-3 in the fourth, but Thompson shrugged off his restlessness to break for 5-3 before holding to love to win the match and move into a second-round match with another French leftie, 37-year-old Adrian Mannarino.
“If you want to support, that’s fine, but not directly at the player,” the departing fan was told.
