Aryna Sabalenka becomes first tennis player to win three titles this year after victory in Madrid

Aryna Sabalenka capped a dream run in the Spanish capital on Saturday night, holding off a late surge from Coco Gauff, 6-3, 7-6 (3), to win the Mutua Madrid Open for the third time in her career.

She previously conquered the WTA 1000 event in 2021 and 2023.

And that Madrid triple isn’t the only good thing to come in a three.

Sabalenka is now the first player, woman or man, to win three tour-level titles this year. She also won the WTA 500 event in Brisbane in January, and another WTA 1000 event in Miami in March.

MOST TITLES IN 2025 (tour-level, men OR women):

  • 3: Aryna Sabalenka (Brisbane, Miami, Madrid)
  • 2: Madison Keys (Adelaide, Australian Open)
  • 2: Felix Auger-Aliassime (Adelaide, Montpellier)
  • 2: Mirra Andreeva (Dubai, Indian Wells)
  • 2: Jessica Pegula (Austin, Charleston)
  • 2: Carlos Alcaraz (Rotterdam, Monte Carlo)

And Sabalenka’s title haul could easily have been higher, as she’s also reached another three finals, at the Australian Open (losing in three sets to Keys), Indian Wells (losing in three sets to Andreeva) and Stuttgart (falling to Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets).
