Andrey Rublev will reportedly get coaching advice from former world No. 1 Marat Safin during the clay-court season.
Russian tennis journalist Sofya Tartakova, who also does PR for Rublev, Daria Kasatkina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, broke the news on social media on Saturday, writing on X that the two-time Grand Slam champion will make his coaching debut with Rublev during the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, which begins on April 6.
Tartakova also reported that Fernando Vicente, who has been Rublev’s primary coach for nearly a decade, will remain in that role alongside Safin.
Though he has never coached on tour, Safin is in fact no stranger to Rublev or Vicente, with the world No. 9 saying last year that the International Tennis Hall of Famer is “a great friend” to his team, and has been a mentor of sorts to his younger compatriot. Last year, following a shock first-round loss at Wimbledon—which was, at the time, Rublev’s first opening loss at a major in more than five years—he had “one big talk” with Safin to pull him out of a slump.
