England and British & Irish Lions scrum-half Alex Mitchell has signed a new “multi-year” contract with Prem side Northampton Saints.
The 28-year-old has made 147 appearances and scored 52 tries for Saints since his debut in 2017.
Mitchell becomes the second Saints player this month to extend his stay at Franklin’s Gardens after his half-back partner Fin Smith also committed his future to the club.
“Northampton Saints has been my home for the last 10 seasons and there’s truly nowhere else I’d rather be playing my rugby,” Mitchell told the club website, external.
“From joining the academy as a teenager to now, the support I receive at Saints has been crucial to all my success on the pitch, so I owe a lot to the club’s coaching staff past and present.
Mitchell scored the try that sealed Saints’ Premiership title triumph in 2024 – their first in a decade – and also helped the club to the European Champions Cup final last season.
“We feel like we’ve got to right some wrongs after last year,” he added. “We want to get back to the top of the pile in the Prem, keep pushing forward in Europe, and put some more silverware in our trophy cabinet.”
Internationally, he has 23 England caps and made two Test appearances on the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia this summer.
“Alex Mitchell is one of the best scrum-halves in the world, and to keep someone of his quality in our environment speaks volumes about the ambitions of this club,” said Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson.
The exact length of Mitchell’s new contract has not been disclosed by the club.
