Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his record-breaking spree in India’s Youth ODI series in England, playing another rampaging knock in a 55-run win over England U-19 on Saturday in Worcester, helping his side clinch the series win with a spell-binding century.
Bettering his 31-ball 86 display from the previous outing, Suryavanshi smoked the fastest Youth ODI hundred in only 52 balls, bettering the world record previous held by Pakistan’s Kamran Ghulam with a 53-ball century in 2019. Having broken the Indian record with nine sixes in the previous match, Suryavanshi took it a notch above to 10 maximums alongside 13 fours as he racked up 143 in only 78 deliveries against a hapless English attack. Suryavanshi’s growing belligerence has received lavish praise from former India head coach Ravi Shastri too, with the World Cup winner stressing that the 14-year-old could soon be fast-tracked into the national team.
Shastri feels he has ticked most boxes and only one final hurdle remains after having previously put on a stunning exhibition during his maiden IPL season for Rajasthan Royals earlier this year. The dashing southpaw conjured up a 35-ball century, making it the fastest IPL hundred ever by an Indian across 18 seasons of the league. The Bihar prodigy has made rapid strides since making global headlines when he debuted for the state in the Ranji Trophy, aged 12 last year, the youngest ever in the history of the tournament.
Picked up almost instantly into the India U19 First-Class set-up, Suryavanshi took the spotligh during the Youth Test series against Australia in Chennai last year, where he smashed 104 runs off just 62 balls. Aged 13 years and 188 days, the left-hander became the youngest centurion in the history of international competitive cricket, setting the record for the fastest century by an Indian at the youth level in only 58 balls.

‘He will be fast-tracked’
Discussing Suryavanshi’s rapidly growing reputation in the age-group circuit with former England captain Michael Atheron during the India-England Edgbaston Test, Shastri said all Suryavanshi needs to do is ace First-Class cricket to knock the doors on the national side within the next couple of years.
“He will play First-Class cricket, but that’s what the IPL does. It gives you that platform. The whole country sees you. And you catch the imagination of everyone. It will fast-track him if he goes and plays First-Class cricket, goes and gets a couple of hundreds in his first couple of seasons.”
“He has already caught the eyes; already made it to the Under-19 team at the age of 14. Smacking it everywhere. And it’s tours like this to England, with this exposure. He can only improve,” Shastri added.
In only seven Youth ODIs, Suryavanshi has clobbered 32 sixes, a feat only better by Unmukt Chand (38) in all recorded Under-19 cricket.
