When former India skipper Rohit Sharma made his way into the middle to play the first ODI against Australia in Perth on Sunday, he looked considerably more lean. Now, former Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nayar spilled the beans on how Rohit went about his fitness regime, assisted by him where the batter lost around 10 kgs.

“Even I didn’t imagine that his weight would come down this much. We had tried this earlier but the consistency that is needed for training and nutrition wasn’t there due to some tournaments or the other coming up. We had an uninterrupted 3 months here. To sum it up, for the first 5 weeks, it was a body builder’s mindset where he was trying to train, completely lean down. He was doing 700-800 reps of every body part. And then finishing every session with a 15-20 mins cross fit which is more cardio-based and movement based. So it was 6 days a week, 3 hrs a day, every single day for 3 months,” Nayar said in a video released on Star Sports X.

“It was non-stop. But the game doesn’t end there. We had to bring a change in his food habit. It was his commitment to go home and not indulge in the famous vadapav and everything else people talk about. That was his commitment to the sport. When your body loses weight, there’s a lot of change in the way you move, how you feel so it was time to bring that into effect. So, it was a lot of hard work. To being a body builder to lean and athletic,” he added.

Rohit didn’t get off to the best of starts in the Australia series with the Mumbai batter falling victim to Josh Hazlewood for 8 runs in the first ODI. In the rain-truncated contest which was brought down to 26-overs per side, India put up 136/9 with Australia needing 131 runs as per the DLS method which they chased down with over 5 overs to spare.
