Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League. The 38-year-old was part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise in the 2025 season. From nine games, he picked up seven wickets at an average of 40.43 and an economy of 9.13 with the ball in this year’s tournament.

They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today🤓. Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Ashwin made his breakthrough into the international career playing for Chennai Super Kings back in 2009. Although he made his debut in that year, he had a breakthrough season in 2010, and his wicket of Chris Gayle in the final of that season was one moment that reflected his ability to stay come under pressure and someone ready for a big occasion.

After a few years with the Super Kings, Ashwin switched across various franchises. Along the way, he was also given the leadership responsibility at the Punjab Kings, which has seen mixed results. At Rajasthan Royals, he was utilized as an all-rounder a batter through the middle overs who could construct the innings when the team lost a few early wickets.
Ashwin has won the IPL title twice in 2010 and 2011. With the Super Kings, he also managed to bag a couple of Champions League titles. As per his own record with the ball overall, he picked up 187 wickets from 221 games at an average of 30.22 and economy of 7.20, and with the bat, he scored 833 runs coming down the order with a solitary half-century to his name.
