India observes the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, commemorating the successful culmination of Operation Vijay in 1999, when the Indian Army declared victory after a nearly three-month-long battle in Kargil, on Saturday (July 26).
To honour the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, COAS Gen Upendra Dwivedi, among others, extended their tributes and wishes. COAS Gen Upendra Dwivedi also hailed the success of the Indian Armed Forces in Operation Sindoor calling the win a “new normal” for India.
‘Their sacrifice will forever inspire citizens’: Droupadi Murmu
President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute to the soldiers in a post on X in Hindi.
“On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.”
“This day symbolizes the extraordinary valor, courage, and steadfast determination of our jawans. Their dedication and supreme sacrifice for the nation will forever inspire its citizens. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!”

In a post on X, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh offered a heartfelt tribute, saying that the sacrifices made during the Kargil War remain a testament to the Armed Forces’ unwavering spirit.
“On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay heartfelt tributes to our bravehearts who displayed extraordinary courage, grit and determination in defending our nation’s honour in the toughest of terrains,” he said.
“Their supreme sacrifice during the Kargil war is a timeless reminder of the unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces. India shall remain forever indebted to their service.”
COAS Gen Upendra Dwivedi launches three projects
Addressing a gathering on Vijay Diwas in Drass on Saturday, the Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi hailed the success of Operation Sindoor by Indian army, calling the stern response a ‘new normal’ established by India.

“India attained a decisive victory by effective targeting of terror infrastructure in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. The army targeted the terrorist infrastructure and foiled the other aggressive moves of Pakistan to attain a decisive victory,” he said.
As part of the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, the chief of army staff also launched three projects, including a portal where people can pay ‘e-shradhanjali’ to martyrs.
The others were a QR code-based audio gateway, on which people can listen to the stories of the 1999 Kargil war battles fought, and the Indus Viewpoint, which offers people a chance to go up to the Line of Control (LoC) in the Batalik sector.
“The nation is safe due to the sacrifices made by the heroes at the icy heights. We remember their dedication and determination, and we bow to the brave heroes who laid down their lives so that we can live a peaceful life with dignity,” he added.

‘Salute the valour and sacrifice of all the brave soldiers’: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann
Punjab’s Chief Minister echoed the emotions of many, and paid tributes to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
In a post on X, Mann said, “We heartily salute the valor and sacrifices of all the brave soldiers who wrote an unparalleled history of bravery in the 1999 Kargil War on the occasion of Kargil Day. Their spirit and courage will always be remembered.”
Mallikarjun Kharge pays tribute to soldiers on Vijay Diwas
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to the soldiers who valiantly defended our motherland in the Kargil War.
