If you have felt as though teams are shooting three-pointers at a ridiculously high rate this season, you’re not wrong. On paper, the 2024-2025 season marks the most average threes attempted per game in DI men’s college basketball history.

*All stats are through February 24, 2025.

Here are seven facts illustrating just how heavily teams are relying on the three-ball:

1. There are 290 teams attempting 20 or more threes per game — 34 more teams than last season, and a staggering 197 more than a decade ago. This year’s current 290 mark is the highest of all time.

2. The 34-team spike of 20-plus three-pointers attempted is the largest spike between two seasons since the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons. The Curry effect…

3. Michigan State is the only team in the top 25 that is not attempting 20-plus threes per game. Tom Izzo’s squad is shooting 19.0 per game — good for 328th in the country.

4. There are 85 teams attempting 25 or more threes per game. Last year there were 50, and two years ago just 36. In only two seasons, the number of teams attempting 25 threes a game has more than doubled. But…

5. The three-point percentage has not changed. In fact, depending on where you cut it off, it has improved. Last season, 61 teams shot 36% or higher. This year, we have 68 teams at that mark. At 35%, we have 109 teams this season compared to 124 last season. Small changes for dramatic spikes in attempts.

6. Twelve teams from the Week 17 AP Poll are attempting 25 three-pointers per game, including five of the top 10. Last year, from the Week 17 AP Poll, just four teams were shooting 25-plus.

7. Of the current top three teams — Auburn, Duke and Florida — at least 40% of their total shots are from beyond the arc. Last season, none of these teams touched that percentage. The Gators own the largest spike of the three, shooting 34% of their shots from long-range last season compared to 43% this season.

Concern brews for UConn and Purdue men’s basketball as March approaches fast

Less than a year ago, UConn and Purdue were at the peak of men’s college basketball, competing for a title. Now, two of the game’s greatest coaches express frustration and concern as March sits less than a week away.
