No. 7 Oregon State put on an old-fashioned clinic Friday to beat No. 2 Virginia 7-2, remaining undefeated and picking up its first-ranked win of the season in the Karbach Round Rock Classic.

The Beavers (5-0) kept it plain and simple in the five-run win over the Cavaliers (2-2, 0-0 ACC). Oregon State scored on singles, walks and passed balls, finishing with just one extra-base hit. The biggest difference between the two teams was the collective effort at the plate — all nine of Oregon State’s hitters finished with at least one hit, versus Virginia’s four, which happened to be the first four hitters in the lineup.

The scoring started after Virginia first baseman Chris Arroyo’s two-run single to left field in the third inning. Oregon State didn’t hesitate to get on the board from there, scoring five runs total in the fourth and fifth innings.

It started with a run scored on a walk and ended with another on a swinging bunt.

The Beavers extended their lead in the eighth on a single to right field and sac fly to center. The first four hitters of the inning reached base.

Although Oregon State’s 13 hits stole the show in the win, the pitching staff held down the fort on the back end. Following junior left-handed pitcher Nelson Keljo’s four innings of work and two earned runs, sophomore right-hander Eric Segura went on a tear.

Segura struck out eight and surrendered zero runs, a major reason behind Virigina’s lack of production after the third inning. Between Keljo and Segura’s 7.1 innings pitched, they struck out 11 and allowed two runs and five hits. Even though Virginia’s pitching staff struck out 12 in the first seven innings, they gave up seven runs, 13 hits and eight walks.

Both teams will return to Dell Diamond Stadium on Saturday and Sunday to play both Oklahoma and Minnesota to conclude their Round Rock Classic schedules.
