NCAA.com Team of the Week, Georgia Tech opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with an 82-76 road win on Sunday over North Carolina, improving to 11-0 on the season, the best start to a season in program history.
The win was the first in Chapel Hill for Georgia Tech since a 56-54 victory on Feb. 12, 2012, snapping a six-game skid on the road. For the third time this season, five Yellow Jackets finished in double-figures with junior guard Tonie Morgan (23) and freshman guard Dani Carnegie (22) combining for 45 points to lead the way over the 14th-ranked Tar Heels.
North Carolina came into Sunday’s contest owning the nation’s sixth-best scoring defense, limiting its opponents to 49.5 points per game. Georgia Tech subsequently scored 50 points in the first half and finished with 82 overall, marking the most points North Carolina has allowed this season by an opponent. Georgia Tech also held North Carolina’s leading scorer, Alyssa Ustby, to 0-6 shooting from the field and only two points, with both coming at the free-throw line.
Georgia Tech started the week on Dec. 11 with a 97-37 home win over Louisiana Monroe, as four players scored in double-figures on the way to the 60-point win. Sophomore guard Rusne Augustinaite led the way with 17 points.
Already this season the Yellow Jackets have downed two ranked opponents, defeating No. 21 Oregon, 74-58 on Nov. 25 in Hawaii, and No. 14 North Carolina on Sunday.
Georgia Tech has been led in scoring this season by Carnegie, averaging 14.6 points per game. Carnegie leads all freshmen in the ACC in scoring and ranks 12th amongst freshmen only nationally in scoring.
Up eight spots to No. 17 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Poll released on Monday, Georgia Tech next opens a five-game homestand with its final two non-conference games, with Rice making a trip to McCamish Pavilion on Dec. 18, followed by Nebraska on Dec. 21.
