With the victory, Sinner puts another notch in his No. 1 belt. He has now won 23 straight matches, four straight tournaments, and five straight Masters 1000s going back to last November. Tennis Channel’s Jim Courier described his current run as his “revenge tour”: Last year he was banned from playing Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid; this year he has won them all.
“I think it’s a lot of dedication and sacrifice I put in every day,” Sinner said, when asked to explain his current flawless form. “At some point there’s gonna be a down, which is normal. I continue to believe in myself every day, showing up every day, every practice session.”
In those four tournaments, Sinner has dropped just two sets, a fact that may make his streak and even his game look clinical to the point of bloodlessness. But it doesn’t mean he has avoided pressure moments. Three times in Madrid—against Cameron Norrie, Rafael Jodar, and Arthur Fils—his opponent, with nothing to lose, pushed him harder in the second set than he had in the first.
