The ongoing West Asia conflict has strained global energy supply chains and slowed fuel shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Addressing the issue, PM Narendra Modi hit out at those “creating panic” and warned them of action.
Opposition takes on govt: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday alleged that the Indian government has “bartered” to the US the right to determine relationships with different oil suppliers. “The pain has just started,” Gandhi warned. “Restaurants are closing, there is widespread panic about LPG, street vendors are affected and as I said, this is only the beginning,” the former Congress president said.

What the govt is doing? Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri said this was an “unprecedented” crisis but there was no shortage of petrol or diesel in the country and the panic on LPG gas was driven by “consumer anxiety”. Puri said India has diversified its oil import routes with dependence on the Hormuz channel sharply down. The share of non-Hormuz crude imports has increased to 70 per cent of the total, Puri told Parliament, underlining the country’s current crude supply position as secure.

Global situation:With no clear end in sight yet, oil prices boiled over to $100 per barrel once again. , and stocks are sinking worldwide on Thursday. The price of a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, got as high as $101.59 overnight before pulling back to $100.44, a 9.2 per cent rise. The S&P 500 fell 1.2 per cent and is returning to big swings following a couple days of relative calm. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 607 points, or 1.3 per cent intraday, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.7 per cent lower.
