College baseball’s first midweek slate last week lived up to the hype, featuring unranked upsets by the hour and a 13-inning thriller in the depths of Florida.
One wouldn’t think it could be topped, at least for a period of time.
This Tuesday defied that, headlined by No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 LSU falling and the Sun Belt Conference throwing a party that gifted college baseball two more top 10 in-state upsets.

San Diego State holds off No. 1 UCLA
Down goes No. 1.
San Diego State outlasted No. 1 UCLA, one of the hottest teams in the country, handing the Bruins their second loss of the season on Tuesday, 4-3.
The road win and trip up California’s coast to Jackie Robinson Stadium was one of SDSU’s most notable wins in program history, holding the Bruins to their lowest run total in their first eight games.

It took a collective effort for SDSU to pull off the upset against UCLA, who swept then-No. 7 TCU this past weekend, shutting down UCLA’s bats most times that they threatened and making opposing pitchers pay.
Starting right-hander Alec Belardes set the tone in the first inning, escaping a zero-out, bases-loaded jam with only one run allowed. He would settle in after that, surrendering just one hit over the next 4.1 innings.
The Aztecs backed up the redshirt sophomore with a solo home run in the third, fourth and fifth innings, topped with a run on thanks to an error in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.

UCLA didn’t go down easily, though, cutting it to a one-run game in the sixth.
With the Bruins knocking on the door, San Diego State’s biggest test reared its head in the bottom of the eighth when UCLA’s heart of the order was due up: All-American shortstop Roch Cholowsky, first baseman Mulivai Levu, and third baseman Roman Martin — each D1Baseball preseason All-Americans.
But Aztecs right-hander Aidan Russell didn’t skip a beat, striking out Cholowsky, getting Levu to line out, and keeping Martin inches away from leaving the ballpark.

The crowd belted a mix of cheers and deep breaths for SDSU. They would shut down UCLA’s offense once again in the ninth to secure the victory.

McNeese stuns No. 2 LSU in close battle
The best way to bounce back from a disappointing weekend series performance? Shocking the No. 2 in the country.
That was McNeese’s reality on Tuesday, upsetting No. 2 LSU on the road, 7-6, just days after the Cowboys were swept by Kansas. One of the biggest wins in school history, McNeese took advantage of an LSU pitching staff that used 10 different arms.
Talk about a turn of events.
Although LSU first baseman Zach Yorke broke the ice in the first inning with a two-run blast to right, the Cowboys responded with authority. They plated four in the second, capitalizing off of four consecutive batters either getting walked or hit by a pitch.

McNeese wasn’t done just yet, pushing its lead to 7-2 in the fourth — the largest deficit LSU had faced up to that point in the young season.
The Tigers fought their way back into the contest, cutting it to a 7-6 game by the end of the eighth. And after LSU right-hander Deven Sheerin shredded through McNeese’s lineup in the top of the ninth, it left the game’s result in the hands of LSU’s offense.
However, the momentum ran out there, unable to put a run across with runners on first and second with one out.
LSU, which won the Jax College Baseball Classic last weekend, will face Dartmouth starting Friday for a three-game series.
